Avocados contain excellent amounts of healthy fats, fiber, and several vitamins and minerals.  For example, 100-gram avocado (about half an avocado) contains the following:

Aside from that, avocados also provide decent amounts of antioxidants, copper, manganese, magnesium, riboflavin, and niacin.  Additionally, they are also low in carbs, providing only 9 grams of carbs per serving, with 7 grams of which coming from fiber.

Avocados are considered a great source of healthy fat, with about 77% of their calories coming from fat.

They contain mostly monounsaturated fat, i.e. oleic acid, which is a type of fat that is very healthy, and small amounts of polyunsaturated fat and saturated fat.

Oleic acid has been shown in numerous studies to be associated with several health benefits, including reduced heart disease risk and decreased inflammation.

Replacing some saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat or monounsaturated fat has been shown in several studies to lead to numerous health benefits, including increased insulin sensitivity, reduced LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, and better blood sugar management.

For example, replacing some fats in the diet with avocado has been found in one review of 10 studies to reduce the levels of triglycerides by 27.2 mg/dl, LDL (bad) cholesterol level by 16.5 mg/dl, and total cholesterol by 18.8 mg/dl, on average.

Plus, avocados also contain an excellent amount of phytosterols, which are plant compounds that are beneficial for heart health.

Avocado Benefits: Feel full and satisfied

Foods that provide decent amounts of fiber and healthy fat can help you feel full and satisfied for longer, thereby reducing your overall calorie intake. This is because of the slow stomach emptying that comes with eating fat and fiber.

It can be noted that avocados are excellent sources of fat and fiber. This means that they should have a strong effect on satiety.

In fact, those who ate a whole avocado with their breakfast have been found in one study of overweight and obese individuals to feel more satisfied and less hungry.

This is why avocados are considered a valuable tool for appetite regulation and weight management.

Avocado Benefits: Improved metabolism and exercise endurance

Some people would take pre-workout supplements for an extra energy boost during exercise.

Interestingly, oleic acid (monounsaturated fats) in avocados is an excellent way to naturally boost your energy.

In fact, people who followed an equicaloric diet high in oleic acid have been found in a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition to experience a 4.5% increase in post-meal metabolism and 13.5% increase in physical activity.

So instead of having baked goods, fried foods, or butter for snacks, try to replace it with fresh avocado for an extra energy boost that would keep your metabolism burning post-workout.

Those who eat fruits and veggies have been shown in studies to have lower body weight than those who didn’t.

Similarly, those who ate avocados have been found in one large observational study to have a lower risk of metabolic syndrome, reduced body weight, and a more nutritious diet than those who didn’t.

This only shows that avocados make a great addition into a weight loss and health-promoting diet.

In addition, people who consume avocados on a regular basis have been found in one large study to be 9% less likely to develop obesity over a 4- to 11-year period.

Although it is yet unclear whether avocados are really effective for weight loss, they have several properties that could have a beneficial effect.

For example, their monounsaturated fat content can have several other benefits beyond heart health, such as increasing the rate at which fat is burned and reducing appetite and cravings, among others.  

However, further research is necessary as these effects are not yet well studied and evaluated.

Nevertheless, avocados have been suggested in some preliminary evidence to help promote weight loss.

For instance, eating one avocado per day, combined with a reduced-calorie diet, has been demonstrated in one study to cause weight loss in overweight and obese individuals. It has also been shown to modestly reduce markers of inflammation.

Another study of overweight or obese adults found that those who eat avocado every day lost a substantial amount of abdominal fat, as compared with those who eat an avocado-free diet.

What’s more, rats fed with avocado extract on a high fat diet have been shown in one animal study to gain less body fat.

Avocados are loaded with calories

Avocados are rich in healthy fat, but they are also loaded with calories.

For example, a 3.5-ounce avocado contains 160 calories, while the same amount of strawberries provides only 32 calories.

Body weight is influenced by several factors, but the number of calories you consume contributes the most.

That being said, make sure to eat avocados only in moderation.

Does it Really Help You Lose or Gain Weight?

Avocados being high in fat does not necessarily mean they can cause weight gain, especially if you include them as part of a well-rounded diet.

They have several qualities that make them weight-loss–friendly. Plus, they have been suggested in some research to be beneficial for weight loss.

It is however important to note that research results on the matter are mixed.

Nevertheless, eating them in moderation is key.
