QUIZ: Are Carbs or Fats Making You Fat?
If you don't have time to read this article and are just looking for the punchline, then here's the answer: carbs. Carbs are making you fat, not fat!
If you're wondering, "But, that doesn't make sense. Shouldn't eating fatty foods make me fat!?!" then read on.
Millions of people struggle on a daily basis to lose weight. No matter what they do, it's an uphill task to shed the stubborn pounds. When they try calorie-restriction diets, they're hungry all the time.
If they give the paleo diet a go, it's too stringent and compliance becomes a nightmare. The Atkins diet is no fun and seems to rob them of all the foods they want to have.
Only one diet has been shown to not only burn fat rapidly but is also fun to adopt. You get to eat fatty foods like cream, butter, bacon, and so on. It's not as harsh as the paleo diet and it's not as boring as the Atkins diet.
So, what diet is this?
You probably already know that it's **drumroll please** the ketogenic diet!
Known as the keto diet, it runs contrary to everything most people believe in when it comes to nutrition. When you're on the keto diet, 75% of the calories you consume must come from fats.
The remaining 20% from protein and 5% from carbohydrates. You should not exceed 50 grams of carbs a day. This will ensure that you stay in ketosis and burn fat rapidly.
Why do carbohydrates cause weight gain?
To understand why carbs are the real culprit, you must know how your body works. When you consume carbohydrates such as bread, rice or pasta, your body converts the carbs into glucose and spikes your blood sugar levels.
Because of that, your body will release insulin to cope with the blood sugar spikes. Over time, your body will become insulin insensitive and release more insulin than necessary to cope with the carbs.
When that happens, the excess insulin will be converted into fat and stored in your fat stores. So, over time, you just keep getting fatter and fatter.
Herein lies the problem - that most weight gain is due to hormonal issues. Once you fix these issues, you'll fix the weight problem. Exercise and a calorie-restricted diet can work, but it's an uphill task. You must fix the root cause.
Now I'm not saying you SHOULDN'T or DON'T HAVE TO exercise or watch what you eat. I'm just saying that most people who do those things fail to lose weight because they aren't addressing the correct issue!
How does eating fat help me lose fat
First off, when you're consuming copious amounts of fat such as bacon and cream and butter, the body realizes that it has an ample supply of fat coming in. That makes the body much more willing to burn off the stubborn fat that it has been clinging on to.
Seems backwards, right? Eat fatty foods and you start to shed excess and unwanted pounds? That's exactly what I'm saying!
Secondly, when you consume fats, you'll not spike your blood sugar levels. Your insulin sensitivity will improve, and you'll not be as prone to storing fat.
Once you're in a state of ketosis, your body is begins to burn fat (ketones) for fuel and it becomes all around much more efficient at doing so. Unlike glucose (from carbs) which causes cravings, the body always has fat stores it can use for fuel.
So, your appetite will reduce greatly, and you'll not have food cravings or be bingeing on ice-cream and cake in the middle of the night.
Most people are using glucose for fuel. That's why obesity has reached epidemic proportions, especially in developed nations around the world... They're addicted to carbs and sugar.
In Conclusion
Making the switch to a fat-based diet may seem counter intuitive, but it's the best way to lose weight fast and keep off the fat successfully. People who have made the switch often remark that they love the keto lifestyle and would never go back.
Give it a try today and discover how eating FAT will actually HELP YOU LOSE FAT! You'll never know until you try it.
